Wayward Son
It was Dark...
I waited for my team and we scoured the scene for hours it seemed
The murder was clean & the only thing heard or seen was a scream
But at once I learned of a lead, that had confirmed all of my beliefs
I had returned to the chief with old note's on looseleaf and reciepts
Up until today a criminal's treachery had never really affected me
But, this letter was written by the deceased & was addressed to me....
To: Detective Carl Mason
(To be opened upon my untimely or premature demise)- Alex Winston
Im sorry. I had hoped everyday that you wouldnt have to open this
I really dont know you and the fact is we havent even spoken since
My son was under the influence & you brought him home after an incident
I swore he used to be a good kid until the day we saw his victim list
My wife was just sick of it, she couldnt bear living in constant fear
It was around noon that Tuesday in June, cops told me she disappeared
Said her car had veered near a cliff and that no body was recovered
When I told our son he didnt seem stunned he just shrugged & uttered
"The police did their job, I guess there's nothing left to discover"
Began to detest each other, I suspected him in the death of his mother
But no other evidence could be uncovered, so I let it be for awhile
Until a pile of more bodies were found & Nathan fit the media profile
On internet & phone sex lines, he'd watch the t.v with a cold smile
At that moment I noticed he was no child & he would never stand trial
My mind struggled with denial & confusion but this is my only solution
No trust in justice or the constitution, I had no one else to turn to
How can you tell someone that your son was the one who murdered you?
Ive left all of my gathered statements & clues which I know to be true
And now detective Mason.......................I've left the rest up to you...

I'd followed Nate's case for many days but I had few leads to chase
Nothing but bodies left in his place, and my failing faith in grace
Waiting for a major break and the day that we'd meet..face to face
I still keep that letter in my safe and read it at least once a day
That bastard fuck should pay, make him take cyanide for lunch I say
All the low-life bums and wretched slums would burn if I had my way
Society's sad display of how the virtuous spirit of man has decayed
Many people sway or stand there afraid waiting on plans they'd made
My mind was plagued with all of this, so I decided to call it quits
Just about to halt my shift when Officer Hodges called in a hot tip
Had the phone but dropped it, fumbled to the end & said "talk quick"
He said they found an escaped hostage & she agreed to help find him
She said she was strapped to a bed in the rundown Greensford Asylum
Just north of Manhattan Island, the place had been closed for years
Once I'd gotten my head clear I grabbed some clean clothes and gear
I got clearance and drove there myself, it was rather close to here
The killer's exposure was near, still my image crept closer to fear
Rain started to pour, I drove onto a road that led to the old doors
Reports said he had hoarded more bodies & put em in the floorboards
Wrapped in plastic with coarse cords, I stop and put my car in park
The lot was an eerie dark, tried the car again but it wouldnt start
A little shaken, I spark a dart and faintly thought I heard screaming
Though my vengence felt more than appealing I had an uneasy feeling
I entered the asylum & noticed the paint on the ceiling was peeling
Grab a stack of past charts and start reading names off a list when,
I'm shocked it states one of it's past patients as a Nathan Winston
Fear kicks in when off in the distance I hear noises in the kitchen
I Quickly draw my pistol and go slowly to investigate the situation
My heart racin as I turned the corner and saw the utter devastation
Multiple mutilations & countless slayings plus many bodies hanging
I started gagging & gasping but in between breaths I heard laughing
Thats when it happened, Nate appeared wiping smears with a napkin
A piece of flesh flapping from his teeth he appeared a pure savage
The knife was still in his grasp but he refused to do as I'd ordered
He advanced & I hit him in the leg while he backed into the corner
But he attacked without warning & stuck a knife into my right thigh
I shot him between the eyes, slumped down & watched him slowly die
