Not to be rude or anything...but I dont think the reason we're in Afghanistan is for the Opium....considering Opium fields were common in Vietnam not in Afghanistan....now if you meant OIL FIELDS that's different.

They want the Eastern world to have a democratic government system following suit like Israel has, this would benefit the US government greatly in the future for many reasons. Easier negotiations, import/exports, and yes of course OIL.
If most of the worlds oil was known to be at the very tip of Africa, believe we'd be there trying to setup a similar government to our own.
