Don't Follow Me

"You people must read, please...
originality is key."
The tortoise and the hare...
a classic story repeated over time,
but not with the same phrasing.
each time it's different...
each time the qualities changing,
the meat between
that specific story's sesame seed buns differ...
even the ending can sometimes have a new outcome!
a sniper assassin's expertise and precision
sometimes launches it's bullet...
chastising it's target, the rabbit, into losing the race.
occasionally, yes, the hare chases a carrot...
which is a distraction
only the energizer bunny could handle...
as he taunts that green snail,
beating his drums -
and the turtle while passing the finish.
Mother and Father always told me the story,
still, everytime it never changed...
each result, predictable and dull as the next.
so predictable I'd often stand at the end,
with a signed check to Mr. Turtle...
but little did Mother know -
I'd also have a carrot for the rabbit,
telling him he was still as slick as Bugs Bunny
and he could have it... I'd tell him
that he was still faster than that tortoise...
and if they ever published another
paper chase between the two...
- that damn turtle'd probably forfeit!
because most of the time
statistics show the turtle needs to lose,
though the story gives the rabbit his faults...
but every once in an eclipsed moon -
(it's still unwritten)
the turtle's brain-power won't matter
and the hare's speed is no longer a key factor...
as a sly fox just eats the two...
gladly licking his lips after.
Yes! Maybe,
these poor sapplings are running, not racing!
their lives at stake, resting on a meal or some teeth,
or maybe the turtle's happily trying
for that headlining: "STEAL OF THE WEEK!"
but who really cares who won the race -
or even how it came to be.
I'm waiting for them to write a book
that's simply insane to read...
I don't care if there's cheating -
it's obvious the tortoise did...
this is about originality,
THERE'S NOTHING MORE TO THIS!
but please, inform me...
or even inform the kids of that loss;
that unwritten plot -
where the hare's in the lead!
whether it ends to be an escape from a fox,
- or just a carrot from a string.
"I guess this moment of originality was all on me,
so people please, PLEASE, try racing -
and God, don't follow me!"
