We were sitting in the dark,
Eating icing from the tub,
And chatting of boys
And school
And laughing over
A shoebox of photographs.
It seems only yesterday
That you dyed your hair red
And pierced your own ears,
Swearing that we were
Best friends forever,
While you skipped
Right out of school,
And my life.
It seems only yesterday
That a joint and a fake
Couldn't be found
When looking in your bag
For some lip smackers.
Remember the pear kind
Tasted real bad?
It seems only yesterday
I ran into your mom,
She wished I'd come to visit;
Like we were still friends.
But I got left behind,
Because a guy with a car,
Always called you Big Red,
Like that was cool.
It seems only yesterday
That I didn’t see you at all,
The memory of our friendship
Rarely resurfaced
For either of us,
I had moved on with my life,
You were busy messing up yours.
Here we are today,
Reminiscing of the yesterdays
Of years ago
That still seems so fresh,
When we open up
That shoe box of memories,
And filling the blanks of the years
When we wandered apart.
Here we are today
Like we never really scattered,
And the silence we both expect
Never comes, the apologies
We never said
Don’t need to be spoken,
A cup of coffee mended
What time pulled apart.
