as exceptionally stupid as the average yank is or their populace as a whole, i'd argue people generally misuse the word.
alanis morissette's song doesn't include any actual examples of irony - which in turn makes the song title ITSELF ironic/ so meta.
fresh's masterful delivery of the word's dictionary definition, prefixed by 'basically' (which should have been italicized with citations or something) shows it's a word he's clearly meditated upon. lol.
well, you used a possessive apostrophe when there was no need (and the word was merely plural), so talk of what is correct is rich coming from you, right?
as with most terms with enough coinage (selfie, gtfo) its continued usage means it's essentially accepted, this includes newer (informal) definitions for older, accepted words. i literally don't like that use of literally, myself.
by the above logic you can keep using irony 'incorrectly'. it's ok.
