Yeah, I never understood the reason for them before I joined. They're designed to help you blend in if you're standing on the top deck. Like if your not aviation (the skittle fuckers with the bright shirts) on the flight deck, it's hard to see you if your looking straight on from another ship.
When I was at Corps school at Fort Sam Houston, we told a bunch of Army guys that there's a chemical in them that turns orange whenever they get wet in case we fall overboard and they have to find us in the water.... They believed us.
