So I just bought a at2020 usb yesterday and I also saw that there was an xlr version of it. I found out that xlr needs phantom power. Basically, what do I need to have to be able to use an xlr mic cause I can still exchange it.

What's the difference between firewire and usb?
firewire transfers data faster and is usually more stable, tend to get more drop out on usb although that depends on the drivers somewhat, ive know it the other way around.
You will also need a firewire card on your pc.
Latency is not such a big deal with usb 2.0 as it was with 1.0/1.1
Just pick a few interfaces in your price range and research how stable they are, thats probably more important and the difference in preamp and conversion quality will be very subtle amongst the low end gear.
If your starting out may as well get the cheapest you can on ebay

Well I got a mac so I don't need to worry about the input but all I need is
xlr mic, firewire interface and then plug it into the input, correct?
Also, why do they have to many channels on it?
id start out with a usb mic its alot easier to use n just practice on that
It'll show in the description of the interface if its supports phantom power.

You're probably going to be just fine with the USB mic that you have. Why do you feel that you need to upgrade to an interface and XLR mic?
Not necessary. By the time you grow out of your USB mic, the interface you bought now will be outdated. Also, unless you're dropping a good chunk of change and have a need to record a bunch of inputs at once, you're going to be wasting your money on an interface at this level. Your Mac has a pretty good sound card in it. It even has optical digital audio, which cheap interfaces don't even have.
