audacity is free and a very good software
Wouldnt bother with audacity when you can get reaper, much more features

MAC BookPro with Logic Pro 9, Reason 5 and ProTools 8
Logic Pro 9 or Pro Tools 8
Hands down Logic Pro 9 because if you just want to record your golden with all the built in plugins an then later down the road you want to make beats your set because it comes with drum machine, sampler, sounds all built in.

I just purchased Presonus Studio One Artist.....
I got it during a promo... but I am sure you can get it free somehow..
It is very easy to use and is loaded with useable features.
