STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Watching from the doorway of the family's Stapleton home, D.J. Megatron's four-year-old son saw three men approach his father at a bodega before the disc jockey and TV personality was shot dead, the victim's first cousin told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Lisa Davis Alexandra, however, told her hometown newspaper it wasn't clear if the boy witnessed the murder.
A law-enforcement source this afternoon shot down the possibility that the boy saw the slaying, telling the Advance the child was asleep in the house at the time and the residence's location -- around a bend -- made viewing the crime impossible.
There have been no arrests yet in the slaying of the 32-year-old, whose given name is Corey McGriff.
McGriff was shot once in the torso at 120 Osgood Ave. at about 2 a.m. yesterday, cops said. He lived at 71 Osgood Ave.
Law enforcement sources told the Advance last night investigators had not yet identified a suspect and were still trying to find someone who might have witnessed the shooting.
McGriff's mother speculated yesterday that robbery was a possible motive. Ms. Alexandra, however, told the Journal-Constitution nothing was taken.
"Nothing -- no phone, no money -- was taken from him," she reportedly said.
McGriff's family was expected to fly up from Atlanta tomorrow morning, Ms. Alexandra told the Journal-Constitution.
McGriff had worked on the air on HOT 97 for seven years, and regularly appeared on “106 and Park,” BET’s flagship music and interview show.
This afternoon, a handful of community activists -- including Rev. Tony Baker of St. Philip's Baptist Church in Port Richmond, and Ed Josey, president of the Staten Island chapter of the NAACP -- gathered at the site of the slaying to denounce violence.
Friends are organizing a candlelight vigil for 7 tonight on Osgood Avenue, where McGriff was slain.
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS (8477). Tipsters can also visit
