Realizing that the onslaught of smartphones, tablet computers, and other portable electronics are only going to grow over the next decade, the Obama administration announced plans to double available wireless spectrum over the next 10 years. President Obama will sign a presidential memorandum today approving the government to auction 500 MHz of federal and commercial spectrum.
Lawrence H. Summers, the Director of the National Economic Council, will explain the new policy today at the New America Foundation in Washington, DC. According to AP, the revenue from the auctions will go to paying down the deficit, improving public safety, and infrastructure investments. In a statement from the White House, Summers expressed excitement over the policy change, saying "This initiative will catalyze private sector investment, contribute to economic growth and help to create hundreds of thousands of jobs."
Wireless spectrum isn't my area of expertise, but the whole plan sounds good to me. With the administration encouraging the spread of wireless broadband across the nation, I'm hoping it'll be a matter of time before I can stop at a park in Fargo, North Dakota and use the internet without issue.
