I just started really taking workout seriously like 3 weeks ago so I never did anything like this.. But I'm not omega scrawny, just thought I'd keep it real for a sec there lol... On the pec machines (not bench) I can usually get up to about 90-95.. And what I do when I fail a set, I go to the next lower number and do a set of those.. That way I'm still kinda gettin a workout in..

Legs I never much thought I would need to do because I play basketball and condition with soccer players sometimes for my school.. But I could still hop on the squat bar if I needed to...
If you just started taking working out seriously around 3 weeks ago, don't even worry about the weight. Just set it up to what you can do, increase it slightly, and just work with what you can lift.

Over time you'll definitely notice you can lift more and more weight. When I first started going to the gym, I couldn't lift half the stuff that I lift now. It just takes time.

And if you don't go with a friend..I'd recommend finding a friend to go with. When I work out with a friend, I push myself harder and find it way more fun. It's also good to know you have someone there to encourage you to get those last couple reps up, or someone to spot you if you needed.

Yes, but dude you're starting lol.

Start with what you feel comfortable with.

    Don't kill yourself now.

You can go to the history of this thread and I was exactly like
    you. (ask Spanja)
I was upset results weren't overnight. Lol.

    It's all about form.

Example: Before I would only do lawnmowers with 20 lb dumbbells, now I'm at 50-60.

    You'll gain.

I honestly don't got anyone to ask about this - except gym workers but I ain't trying to ask them anything
the back and core bears the weight of the entire upper body, so it's innately a beast. The back is involved in the two other major lifts, If you have a strong back, you'll be able to bench and squat more.

Back is my favorite thing to train. I could deadlift over 225lbs at the age of 13.

it's frequently injured though. the main thing you have to remember is to keep your spine arched, not rounded.

I've heard some people say to avoid cardio or to do as little as possible.

I play soccer, so how the heck do I avoid it? (I know it sounds stupid but you know what I mean)

    I'm now at 5'8 156
not as long as you get enough calories in.

remember the body needs calories to grow. Lifting sets in motion the growth, but the calories(from protein and carbs) achieve the growth. Play footy, lift, and love life.

    Weight gains as in muscle?

Or are you trying to pack on a little bit of fat?

If it's the second..Yes, cardio will burn off fat. But I'm sure you know that lol

If it's the first one, muscle..No, but to an extent.

When you do cardio..It first takes energy from your Carbs, then from your Fats, then from your Proteins/Muscle tissue. Generally if you wanna keep up your weight gains, you wanna shoot for only burning off the first two. Carbs and Fats. Once it burns through the supply at that time from those two, thats when catabolism will set in, and your body will start taking energy from muscles.

It depends on your body type..But generally doing above average to high intensity cardio for an hour or more is when your body will dry up it's Carb and Fat supply and start taking away from your muscles. So if it's high intensity cardio, if you keep it under around an hour, you should be fine.

If you can't keep it under that time and know your going to be doing a lot of high intensity cardio, then fill up on carbs a couple hours ahead of time. The more carbs you have in your body, the more energy it'll take from it, and the longer your cardio will last without catabolism on the muscles.

The way you can look at it, is your stomach. If you ate a nice big meal, you'll be full for a long time. Your stomach will start eating what you put in it, then as it runs out, it'll be hungry for more. Your stomach starts to hurt from wanting food, growling and what not. Well you go a week without food, your stomach starts catabolism and eating itself for food to survive and provide energy. However if you eat inbetween that, you provide it more energy to go off of. That's the most similar thing I could relate it to.

    Working Out

Yeah I would kill my back in an instant if I tried lifting something heavy like that while it was rounded

I'll keep that in mind for sure

    Re: Working Out

Style - Just a FYI.. When lifting for specific muscle groups, concentrate on that muscle being worked.

For example, if you're doing lat pull downs... focus on your lats being worked. If you don't, you'll probably be using other muscle groups to lift the weight.. like the muscles in your arms.
