Adobe audition is one of the most common house hold recording programs used. Youtube would of been my first place to check out.

really audition is pretty user friendly i mean theres a record button which ofcourse you record mono onto your beat actually i think i checked out a book a while back but it was on reaper and came with a reaper demo it tells you pretty much the basics of reaper but reaper is the same as most d.a.w's
