I actually really like this, but it feels unfinished to me. The composing is awesome and if it had a bit more mastering it would be sick as hell.
As far as the downtempo synth instrument I would have made it wider and panned it to extreme left and right so it's more of a melodic soundscape and fills up the empty areas in this mix.
For the beat, the snare sounds too filtered and feels out of place a bit. I would filter the entire drum track evenly, bump up the Lows on the EQ, add a slight reverb, and a vinyl effect - so it sounds like it's coming out of an old record player.
The composition for the strings were alright but could have been more exciting - the main issue I had was the strings sounded too Midi. I would get a new VST for your strings and play around with reverbs, filters, and EQ to get a more realistic sound.
I can hear how this sound *could* sound without changing any of the composition and just mastering it a bit - and it sounds awesome. Hopefully you can come back to this and do a little more to it and make it into that song because this has the potential to be really good.

ok.. I like the video game kinda back ground music.. makes me think of zelda kinda.. lol.. which is cool.. the drums good.. like the scratches.. though u used em maybe a lil to much.. but this a dope beat.. simple boom bap.. my fav style
