Bolivian president Morales links US to assasinatio

Lmao what an intriguing story this is turning out to be for me personaly.

    guardian.co.uk, Monday 20 April 2009 02.00 BST

President Evo Morales has said that an alleged assassination plot against him by Balkan mercenaries and an Irishman may have been backed by the US embassy in the Bolivian capital La Paz.

Police commandos shot dead three men last week in a hotel room in the eastern city of Santa Cruz, which was said to be the base for a conspiracy to wipe out government leaders and stage a coup.

Irish authorities are attempting to repatriate the body of Michael Dwyer, 24, one of the trio whose bullet-ridden bodies were displayed in photographs published in Bolivian newspapers.

Two survivors of the group, reported to be a Croatian and a Hungarian, were moved to a jail in La Paz over the weekend, while diplomats, politicians and law enforcement officials tried to ascertain the full picture. Opposition leaders accused the government of jumping to conclusions and manipulating the incident to suit its own purposes.

Morales, Bolivia's first indigenous president and an outspoken critic of the US, elaborated on the alleged conspiracy while attending a regional summit in Trinidad and Tobago. He told a news conference that he had asked Barack Obama, in a closed session with 12 South American leaders, to repudiate the plot, which Morales said might be linked to previous US-backed efforts to unseat him.

If the US president did not repudiate the alleged conspiracy, "I might think it was organized through the [US] embassy", said Morales. "I don't want meddling in my country." Obama replied that he was unfamiliar with the incident but assured Morales that his administration was not involved, said a US official at the summit.

Interpol offered to help the police investigation in Bolivia. The mystery began last Thursday when police said that an attempt to arrest a gang of mercenaries led to a gun battle in a hotel room, leaving three dead and a pile of intercepted weapons. No police officers were injured, and it was unclear if the suspects, who were killed in their underwear, had opened fire.

Officials said the group probably had been responsible for a recent dynamite attack on the residence of a Catholic cardinal, Julio Terrazas, and that it had plotted to go on to mount a "spiral of violence" by killing Morales, his vice president, and his chief of staff, as well as opposition leaders.

"The terrorist group had a strategy, and part of the strategy was to attack the cardinal and [take] other actions, not only against the president or vice president, but other authorities as well," said the deputy interior minister, Marcos Farfan.

In Ireland, Dwyer's family in Tipperary said they were shocked, and appealed for privacy. Dwyer was a student at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, but on the Facebook website he had posted photos of himself in military gear and holding fake weapons. Some Irish commentators describe him as a fantasist.

The other dead were named as Eduardo Rozsa Flores, 49, a Bolivian-Hungarian who reportedly fought in the former Yugoslavia, and Magyarosi Arpak, a Romanian who was said to be a sniper.

The two detained were named as Mario Francisco Tadik Astorga, 58, reportedly a Bolivian-Croatian who also fought in the Balkans, and Elot Toazo, a Hungarian and a computer expert.

    Then this:

Croats Accused of 'Breaking Up Bolivia'

Croatian officials are assessing reports of Croats living in Bolivia being accused of being "extremists" and trying to break up Bolivia after a failed attempt to kill Bolivian President Evo Morales.

This is according to Belgrade's daily Blic.

Last week, an elite Bolivian police squad killed three members of an alleged terrorist group suspected of planning attacks on Morales. One of those killed was a Hungarian nationalist who had fought as a mercenary for the Croats in the 1992-1995 war in the then Yugoslavia.

Bolivians have since alleged that Croats living in Bolivia of trying to break up Bolivia in the same way they have broke up Yugoslavia in the 1990s, according to Blic.

"We are going to assess the situation in Bolivia and consider sending a diplomatic note. The Croatian government cannot be responsible for what its former fighters are doing now," Croatian Vice Premier Jadranka Kosor was quoted as saying in the report.

Blic reported that authorities in Bolivia had linked alleged terrorists to a rich Bolivian businessman of Croat descent who is advocating for the autonomy of rich provinces.

The businessman, whose father is a Croat and mother is Montenegrin, allegedly organised the terrorists and brought in Montenegrin mercenaries, claims Blic.

Bolivian police in the raid on Thursday also arrested two suspects, including a Croatian veteran of the 1992-1995 war.

Classic. The Balkanization of Latin America begins!

Zagreb, 20 April (AKI) - The Croatian government has expressed concern over the alleged involvement of two Bolivian Croats in a plot to assassinate Bolivian president Evo Morales. It has ordered Croatia's ambassador to Bolivia Vesna Terzic to closely follow developments after a shoot-out last week between police and a suspected gang of foreign mercenaries, allegedly hired to murder Morales.

Zagreb daily Vjesnik said on Monday there were no signs that Croat immigrants in Bolivia were being victimised after the arrest of one of the suspected mercenaries, a Bolivian of Croat descent, Mario Francisco Tadic, or the fatal shooting of a second man, Eduardo Rosza Flores, in last week's gunfight in the eastern city of Santa Cruz.

An Irishman Dwyer Michael Martin and a Romanian Arpad Magyarosi were also shot dead in the gunfight after which police arrested a Hungarian, Elot Toaso, besides Tadic.

Morales (photo) said the five men were members of a gang of foreign mercenaries who were planning an attack on him and several other officials.

Flores, known as 'Chico', and Tadic both fought in Croatia’s 1991-95 war of secession from the former Yugoslavia. There is a sizeable Croat immigrant community in Bolivia and local media reports had linked the alleged conspirers to a Bolivian opposition leader, Branko Marinkovic, also of Croatian origin.

Bolivian media reports had described Croat immigrants as “extremists and fascists” in the wake of the alleged assassination plot against Morales, reportedly stoking feelings of heightened insecurity among that community.

“For now there are no indications of increased pressure on the Croatian community in Bolivia,” said Croatia's foreign ministry spokesman Mario Dragun.

"If it should occur, ambassador Terzic will be called to the ministry for further consultations," he said.

Tadic and Toaso were moved to a high security jail in Chonchocoro on Sunday. Bolivian media reported that there was no jail in the capital, La Paz, secure enough to prevent the "two trained terrorists" from attempting an escape.
