The Venus Project

Yes, I do take documentaries like Zeitgeist, Addendum, and Endgame etc. with a pinch of salt but does anyone think that a society like that outlined by the Venus Project (http://www.thevenusproject.com/) could ever be possible? That one day we will look back on the current time as a barbaric age ruled by a corrupt monetary system? That the technology will have advanced to the point where most people don't need to work and there will be no poverty, and as a result, no crime?

These are the kind of things I think about when I should be doing more important stuff, like working. Plus that guy that promotes the Venus Project is awesome because he reminds me of George Carlin. But yeah, any (informed) opinions on this...?

The guy that runs the VP, i think, is something like 94 years old..

one thing you have to understand, is that the "corrupt monetary system" in place today, is in fact a good working system. of course it benefits some people more than others, it influences crime, and whatever else you can come up with thats shitty about it. but we cant forget that its the only working system on the table today, for us. the VP is an extremely good idea IMO, but it would take so much for the world to get to that point, so much. the entire world would have to change the way they think about life just to get this idea moving. one thing i agree with most here, is that it is time for the world to proceed into that future ideal. its 2009 and nothing has changed, everything we do is the same shit thats been done for a long time for the exception of little stupid gadgets that make things easier. it will continue to be this way as long as the way people think remains the same. and i'm not just talking about scientists, religious leaders, and government officials, i'm talking about you and me, and everybody else.

unless we change how we consciously view life and humanities role in the universe, we will continue to be confined to this planet fighting wars over other peoples greeds and selfishness that hardly concerns the masses besides the fact that we hopefully dont get caught in the cross fire..

I used to be scared of technology when I was younger, I pictured that technology would improve so drastically that one day in the future, humans wouldnt have to do ANYTHING. Like you just hook yourself up to a computer from the day you were born to the day you die, and you live your whole life virtually. Imagine a Life where you can create and control things.

The Venus project is basically what a perfect Utopian society would look like. Unfortunately, we as humans haven't matured enough for it to be possible. I agree with what you say though, one day, probably about 500-1000 years in the future (if we take the right path) we could look back on what life is like now and think of it like the Christian dark ages. People would be amazed that we were stupid enough to use a system with money and all of the liabilities it carries.

Don't get me wrong, there is no other system we could realistically be using right now except for socialism, but capitalism has been endorsed by more powerful nations. With that said it may be a necessary stepping stone.. allowing us to realize that it's a shit system and learn from our mistakes, and as soon as our technology is capable of doing all of the work for us and money becomes a less prominent factor in society, something like the Venus project becomes a very real possibility. Maybe religion will die off also.
I think it was Michio Kaku who said that a civilizations relationship with religion is similar to a child's relationship with it's mother. When the civilization grows to a certain age it no longer needs religion to explain all of the unknowns to it. It is ready to begin finding the answers for itself. This has been happening ever since man was born into this world.
