Put it this way... you cant download a crack of Mackie monitors. hardware is normally how you find out if a person is dedicated or not because obviously if a person has some money and theyre passionate about music or whatever and they want to be atloast semi-professional in the field theyre going to have to invest (dont hold me to this view though)
Im not rich atall but by the end of this week Ill have come hardware compressors simply because they sound better with my use than all of the softwre cormpressors I've used - 1 for bass and the other for vocals. I feel some of the software limiters and compressors I have are good for punchy guitars and synths.
And back to the speaker thing yeh... you can download a DAW instead of using a desk, use vsts instead of the instrument and plugins instead of outoard fx but much of this is due too comprimise in lack of budget (in most cases). Software is generally more accessbe because its cheaper and sometimes even free!

So my answer is when I get more and more money Im comprimising less and less but obviously I wont buy a $30 shitty compressor just to say I have some hardware because the fruityloops compressor is probably better than it. Make use of what you have to make everything sound as good a possible - and if possble Ill buy that plugin or monitors or whatever if i feel theyll help me.

what ones are you looking at and what sort of use do you want to put them to?
Go and try em out if possible or get a loan of them
