Is there any stats on what demograph still buys the most music? Rap specifically.
I wanna be a rapper. I wanna sell my music to this group of people. I dont shoot people. I dont sell cocaine. Im fat and Im ugly, but I kick flows like Bekcham.
Im guessing these people I wanna sell too aint criminals neither, so thats one way I can relate to them, right? That the trick isnt it? How do I tap into this market you think?

well, first of all... your main consumer of rap is going to be white teenage females. Second would be 19-25 year old black females.
and neither demographic wants someone who they can relate too. They buy rap music mostly because it represents a lifestyle that is taboo to them. Something they DON'T relate too. Something "untouchable" in a sense.
The same reason people love Sci-Fi, or Porn.
That's why your highest selling rappers are cocaine dealing super thugs, who kill anyone who crosses them... (but only in the studio).
The image that is the most believable, and that makes the music you can dance too the hardest is going to be the highest seller. Soulja Boy didnt sell alot because of his image, the glasses, etc... not beleivable and cornballish, but his dance is what sold his ringtones, and mp3s. But he sold alot of ringtones and mp3's... (but that's a whole nother topic) kanye sold alot cuz of his image, and his music hits in the clubs on a international level. 50 is a image machine...period. Plus he always blends the "idea" of his image with dance worthy club music.
Unfortunately for you also, is your ugly, and fat. The reality of the situation in the industry right now does not favor you. All fatboys have trimmed down, or are trimming down. Even artists who have been on the grind for a long time are trimming down before they even get a big record. Image is a big part of marketability, which means everything in todays music industry.
It technically would be possible for you to lock up a market of people who "relate" to you, but then you face your biggest problem. Finding a AnR or a reclrd label rep who will go that hard against the grain to push your brand. You would probably win the lottery before that happens.
The concept of success is nothing like the actuality of what it takes to achieve it. ALOT needs to be looked at, and planned, and timed right in order for an artist to be successful in today's market.

Kris you just confirmed the thoughts that been floating around in my head, but it makes greater sense the way you put it. Especially about people wanting taboo, or something thats not theres.
Im also glad you broke it down to different areas, thats what I was hopin would come of this, not just like 'ask the man who has every answer' but rather discussion, brainstorming, etc. We're all tryna make it somehow. Its great to point out these barriers or whatevers holdin us back. If its a problem we'll fix it, get around it, or replace it. That thought keeps me goin.
