2 Chorus Questions

    1. When recording a chorus. Do you go over every part in the beat where the chorus should be placed, record it manually? Or do you record it once, mix/edit it. Then copy and paste it where it should be in the beat.

    2. Is there anyway I can make my voice like this on my computer... with some computer or something?

    Chorus starts at 1:24

    EDIT: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Y-VJHie1RqE

There's direct link to youtube video. I dunno what I'm doing wrong but it says the video is no longer available when you push play. :S

    Re: 2 Chorus Questions

how you record your chorus is up to you. there's no right or wrong answer.

In the video there's nothing special done to his voice. A chorus is typically recorded with a bunch of vocal tracks layered together. I usually start with one track dead center, 1 right, and 1 left. depending on how far left and right you pan the tracks will determine the amount of stereo effect there is. You can also add more vocal tracks and pan them different degrees left and right to create a wall of sound. You just have to experiment and find what fits for that particular song. I can tell you that if you pan a vocal track left you need to pan another one the exact same amount on the right to keep the chorus centered in the mix. If you pan one track farther in one direction then the chorus is going to appear to be on that side of the mix.

    Re: 2 Chorus Questions

I usually record each hook live, rather than cut and paste... unless it's supposed to be a club track, where the hook needs to sound exactly the same... I do the center, right, left layering like Opey said, but I also tend to add a very slight delay to the left and right tracks to give it a "chorus" feel... I'll often also do a track very monotone and lower pitch and bury it behind a little just to give the hook more depth...

there's really unlimited options, just play around till you like what you hear... variety is the key from track to track...

Heh, I never used panning. Never got the point of it. I looked it as why the hell would you want you're vocals to sound louder in the left speaker than the right? But yea, I think I'm starting to get it. Thx for both posts guys.

one thing to remember also is to not have the panned tracks as loud as the center... if you do that it will all just be real loud, but not have that chorus sound you're looking for...

    Re: 2 Chorus Questions

^Ohh, ok. So, I have my main chorus track right. Then, I layer that track by recording it again in a different way..... or just simply copy and pasting. So, I don't fuck with the main one right? Just the other layered ones?

    Re: 2 Chorus Questions

that's one way... you can copy and paste, just remember to pan the copied tracks and adjust them and/or add effects... I wouldn't fuck with the main, centered track other than to add a slight reverb or other vocal effect to achieve the sound you're after...

you should mix every track, you need to be sure each vocal fits into the big picture properly...

    Re: 2 Chorus Questions

DO NOT copy and paste the track. rerecord it. the reason you have to put delays on your tracks to get a chorus effect is because you're copy and pasting. If you do that you might as well use one track with a chorus fx processor on it.

    Re: 2 Chorus Questions

^Ahhh.... that's what I've usually been doing. I just copied and pasted. Had the main chorus mixed like..... ummm..... well, lemme just show you where I put the 4 numbers.

    -------------------------------------
3
1
4

2
    --------------------------------------

^That was my main chorus. Then the one I copy and pasted would be somewhat similar, but more of a bassy sound to it.

EDIT: ahh fuck, it doesn't show the numbers as typed... Lemme try to explain. Number 1 was near top left corner. Number very close to bottom, mid left. Number 3 was upper right corner... kinda mid right corner, close to the top. and number 4 was around the right corner, and move down so it'd be a little above the middle. Lol, hope that explained it.
