Thats wrong man... the type of muscle you build through weight training depends entirely on the amount of reps you do, anything from around 12 reps upwards is gonna give you big mass increases, but doing a maximum of say 5 - 8 reps (6 ideally) before failure means your using the optimum weight for strength training, which means you will be getting a high strength ratio to muscle mass. Lifting heavy is the only way to strength train.

I find a brilliant exercise for boxing is hold a dumbell in each hand and practice your normal punches it will do wonders for your punching power.
