    Paper or Plastic

    From Intricate Emotions a couple weeks ago.

    Common inquisition,
    A once unanswerable question:
    Who am I really
    Within this grand scheme?
    Technological advancement
    Realizes the self, evolving.
    Once unknown, now defined:
    Who am I?
    Identity’s a transcript;
    A credit card;
    A drivers license;
    A birth certificate;
    A passport.
    The past dictated
    A malleability of character.
    Today dictates
    The necessity of
    Government issued
    Papers and plastics;
    Once recyclable,
    Now undeniably necessary
    To merely function
    In this technological world.
    Without a shadow of a doubt
    You’re you, and I’m me,
    My plastic tells me so.
    But, will you borrow me your life?
    I’ll return your recyclables
    When I’m done.

    I liked this a lot. Have you read Langston Hughes? Your identity theme really reminds of his poem "Paper for English B"...I think that's what it's called. I'll have to check.

    Your definition of the self is interesting-people are only defined by credit cards and passports and SIN numbers-at the same time, where does the interest in another come from at the end of the poem? What provides the desire, and the consideration to, ahem, "return your recyclables when I'm done" ?
    It implies that there is more than you're telling us...and I kind of like it that way because it leaves the reader to draw the conclusion that there is more to life than the numbers that define us.

    Nice work.
