lmfao what kind of computer do u have?? i need to know how fast it is and how much storage it has. if you don't know what i'm talkin about then you need to find someone who does. or if you have like a Dell or Gateway or some other brand name computer then look for the brand and model number.

ok your computer is decent for the most part. You will definitely need more RAM (Memory). You only have 256MB. That is the minimum for Windows XP to run normally by itself. You want atleast 1GB for audio production. The cheapest memory is at www.zipzoomfly.com. If you give me the model number of your computer (printed somewhere on the case) i can link you to the exact memory you need.

You should also consider getting another hard drive to store your audio files on. High quality audio projects can take up a massive amount of storage. If you can't afford one right now it's not that important but you WILL end up needing one. Also, having a second hard drive helps your computer run faster when recording. Consider getting atleast another 80GB drive. I would honestly recommend getting a 300GB drive so you know you won't run out of room any time soon. Cheapest place to get hard drives is eBay.

You also need to optimize Windows for audio production. This is very important especially with your computer because it's not the fastest. You won't have internet access after this so if you need to use the same computer to access the net you need to load a second installation of windows. That way when you start your computer, you will have a choice of 2 windows installations to go into. 1 will be your regular installation where u can do whatever, and the second will be for recording only. The instructions to optimize windows can be found here:
    http://www.digitalproducer.com/2002/...ze_pcaudio.htm

    On to your budget...

$700 is a decent budget for equipment. Once your computer is prepped to record, you will have no problem producing high quality tracks worthy of demo and mixtape distribution. I recommend the following gear:

Rode NT1a Condensor Mic ($150 on eBay)
    E-Mu 1820 Interface ($350 on eBay)
Sony MDR-7506 Headphones for Monitoring ($100)
AKG K55 Headphones for Recording ($30)
    Stedman PS101 Pop Filter ($40)
Quiklok MI A-300 Mic Stand ($30)

You'll also need a mic cable. You can get a 20ft XLR mic cable from musiciansfriend for about $5. But if you have a little more money in your budget you might want to invest in a nice Mogami mic cable. You can get a 15ft Mogami mic cable from ebay for about $20. That's a bargain.

    Software:
    Cubase SX3 or Nuendo 3
    Wavelab 5 or Soundforge 8
    Waves Diamond Bundle

PM me if you need to know where to get these programs very cheap.

I have good quality compared to most cats. Not great quality. But, if you know how to master, the quality is rather well. I use a cheap set up.

    Marshall MXL 990
    ART Tube Pre-Amp
    Adobe Audition 1.5
    Waves Diamond
    Sonic Maximizer
    Voxengo Crunchessor
    Voxengo GlissEQ

u can make anything sound good if you know what you're doing. I've heard labtec mics and stock soundcards sound like studio tracks b4. but you want the quality to actually be there. you want to do as little mixing as possible. you want the tracks to sound natural.

First of all, go get another 512mb of Ram at www.zipzoomfly.com. Then follow these instructions to optimize your PC for audio production:
    http://www.digitalproducer.com/2002/...ze_pcaudio.htm

You also might want to consider upgrading your processor. I don't know how big of a processor your motherboard will accept. You'll have to figure that out. I'm gessing between 2.4 GHz and 3.0GHz. If you can put atleast a 2.6GHz chip in there then do it. Look on ebay for cheap processors. If you can't afford it then don't worry about it right now. The memory is more important.

For a $450 budget, go with:
Rode NT1a Mic ($150 on eBay)
    Emu 0404 Soundcard ($100)
PreSonus DigiTUBE Mic Pre ($100 on eBay)
    Sony MDR-7506 Headphones ($100)
