it crackles because you're clipping. turn the level down. nothing should ever peak above -.1 db EVER. if any levels ever do they're gonna crackle. and the BLANKET....not a sheet lmao.... is supposed to go BEHIND you when u record in the corner of the room. it doesnt pad the wall. it shields the mic from the noise in the rest of the room lol. and u need to learn how to mix. ur mic is ass so u have to EQ it to emphasize the right frequencies. noise reduction will also help. u should get waves diamond bundle.

u need to turn the input level down on the soundcard till you're hittin about -8 to -10db. u also have to watch the meters on your fx plugins to make sure they don't clip. nothing should ever clip.

now for fx.... first of all, are u using a bus to route all your vocals to? or are u applying fx to each individual track? You need to use a bus. If u don't know how then search the help file for Cool Edit for fx bus and learn how to use it.

Apply your fx to the fx bus.... not the tracks. The order that you apply these fx is called a chain. the order of the fx chain is very important. Try this chain to start with...

    DeEsser > Q10 Paragraphic EQ > RCL (compressor) > TrueVerb > X-Noise

Note: The Screenshots are NOT the settings you want to use. They're only to show you what the plugin looks like.

DeEsser: Only use this if you need it. If the "ess" sounds aren'tloud then you don't need this. If you do then select the Male "Ess" preset then adjust the threshold down until the "ess" sounds aren't overwelming.

Q10 Paragraphic EQ: First, you want to use a Low Pass "TYPE" on the #1 setting. Set the gain as low as it will go. Adjust the frequency to 60. and adjust the Q as high as it will go. This is called a Bass Roll Off at 60Hz. The Paragrapgic EQ is the most difficult plugin to use, but its way more accurate than a Graphic EQ. To EQ your vocals u mostly want to use Band Pass filters. The gain obviously adjusts the volume within that frequency range. If you don't know what frequency is then shoot yourself. And the Q sets how wide or narrow the frequency range is. The higher you set the Q the more narrow the range will be. Just mess with it awhile and get a feel for it. but the most important concept to understand is when to raise the level of a range and when to lower it. So if you're listening to a track and everything sounds good, but it sounds like it's missing a specific frequency then you want to raise the level of that frequency. BUT say you listen to a track and it sounds muffled by the bass or lower frequencies. You wouldn't increase everying else so you can hear it. You want to take away from that frequency range to emphasize the rest. You always want to take away before you add anything to leave yourself with plenty of headroom to work with. Unfortunately the EQ is the most important as well as the most complicated part.

RCL: Solo the vocals for better accuracy. First set the attack as low as it will go. Set the release to about 160. Adjust the ratio to 3.00. Adjust the hreshold down until the vocals sound full and level but not harsh or distorted. Then adjust the gain up until it's as loud as it will go without clipping. After you're done, unsolo the vocals and adjust the gain on the bus to where the vocals sit in the mix at a good level.

TrueVerb: Select NY Plate from the presets. Turn the decay time all the way down. Then adjust it up until the vocals sound good in the mix. People tend to go heavy on the reverb. You shouldn't really HEAR the reverb itself. It should just be there supporting the track.

X-Noise: Adjust the preset to White Noise. Change the resolution to High. Press the Learn button and play the track thru atleast an entire verse. Then hit the learn button again. If you want you can mute everything but the vocal tracks and click Difference while playing to hear all the garbage it took out of your track. Make sure uyou set it back to Audio after you'rs done.

After you're done, adjust the bus gain as needed. It's also good to run X-Noise on the whole track in the Main Bus after you're done mixing. Also, make sure that if the main bus is clipping you turn it's gain down. Don't turn down all the other levels to stop the main bus from clipping. To get a nice full track with good levels to mix down use the L2 +Ultramaximizer on the main bus. Set the Out Ceiling to -0.1. Adjust the Threshold to wherever the track is peaking the most during playback. I couldn't find a screen shot of the actual plugin but it looks something like this:

After you're finished adjust the Main Bus Gain untill the track starts peaking at -0.1. Then you're done. This might seem long but it's really a very quick mixing procedure that will get you by until you really learn what you're doing.

No offense man but you really need to focus on your rapping skills, instead of worrying about having the best mic's and mixers.
