Strange Twist in Wendy's Finger-in-Chili


When Anna Ayala allegedly found a 1-1/2-inch long fingertip in her bowl of Wendy's chili on March 22 at a Wendy's restaurant in San Jose, Calif., she was so emotionally distraught she was immediately ill. Now in a strange twist, she says she's so emotionally distraught by all the attention she has received that she is dropping her claim against the Dublin, Ohio-based food chain. Ayala has decided not to sue Wendy's, reports The Associated Press.



Her attorney, Jeffrey Janoff, explained it this way: It "has caused her great emotional distress and continues to be difficult emotionally." Once the news hit that Ayala had bit into the finger, Wendy's immediately conducted its own internal investigation and determined that anyone who had access to any part of its food chain, including the employees in the San Jose restaurant, all had their fingers intact. Wendy's is still determined to find out what really happened and is offering $50,000 to the first person who can provide verifiable information that identifies the origin of the finger in the chili.



Meanwhile, late last week police searched Ayala's Las Vegas home as part of their investigation, but would not say what they were looking for. A family friend who lives in the house said that police searched freezers, a picnic cooler, and the belongings of an aunt who once lived in the house. "The simple fact of the matter is that the finger came from somebody. Where's that person at?" Sgt. Nick Muyo, a spokesman for the San Jose Police Department, told AP.



Ayala insisted to an AP reporter that police are out to get her. "Lies, lies, lies, that's all I am hearing," she told the news service. "They should look at Wendy's. What are they hiding? Why are we being victimized again and again?" Ayala, who is 39, has a history of filing lawsuits, including one against El Pollo Loco restaurant in Las Vegas where she claimed her daughter, Genesis, got sick from eating food there. She also sued a former boss for sexual harassment and sued an auto dealership, claiming a wheel fell off her car.
