Here how the movie gets all the more fucked up
SPOILER
1) Do you remember the picture he drew as a kid? The one that made his mother come to school? Remember the picture...its a picture of Evan killing the 2 inmates! Why would 7 year old Evan know what those inmates look like? The movie is, in a sense, a constant loop of Evan trying to fix his life.
At age 7 he draws a picture of an alternate reality that doesn't come true, but if it had he would be 20 years old when it happens.
2) We are led to belive that a 'blackout' is due to a tramtic situation but we have to bring up a point of 2 particular times that he blacks out. First, holding the knife in the kitchen and secondly when he is drawing the picture (both at age 7). By noting those two examples, and the ending with the old family vidoes, we can see that Evan can in fact go to any time in his life as long as he has a clear recolection of it. His 'normal' life span, that one being before he became 20 and started going back, has these blackouts to make space for future Evan to come back and alter things. If 20 year old Evan wanted to change everyday of his life, all he needed to do was look in the journal of that particular day. While he only was after chaning the major moments in his life he had the ability to change each and every day of his life.
