which musical form in your opinion takes more talent to do rock or rap

yeah it always seems like rock heads try to put rap down i dont know why its like that maybe their just jealous that rap artist are selling more than rock artist but the one knock they seem to have on rappers is that they dont play instruments.. i had a big argument with people on this other site bout this.. i said that i think rap takes more talent to do cuz rock artist write maybe 10 lines or more of lyrics and repeat them in a loop throughout the song i said that rap artist write more lines of lyrics and that their lyrics are more complexed..

then cats would say that anyone can rap.. but the same can be said about rock.. anyone can play instruments but you might not be able to do it well

drop your opinions on this subject stay as objective as you can

For expression, rap would be harder because rap, in theory, is all about the message not the beat. So a rapper has to be able to say more than other people in order to get recognition. Rock requires you to be a singer, and I stand firm that singing is a talent you are born with, it can not be taught/learned only practiced and fine tuned. So a rapper can be any body who has a message. A rocker must be able to sing.

Then there is the aspect of combining with music, for this rap is harder once again because (making a generalization) rock lyrics are delivered at a slower tempo that rap, making it easier to stay on beat. Rap also has the added difficulty of flow. Flow is also prominant in rock but not as important.

Lastly while a rapper can sit down and rap most rockers have an insturment of sorts in their hands. Speaking from personal experience using an instrument (piano in my case) is not by any means easy, espically at a level where you would get recognition for it.

So what I am saying is that Eminem does have more talent with the crafting and usage of words, but Alicia Keys (discounting being perfect to look at) has more talent because of her piano ability, song writing ability and great singing voice. But, as stated before, not everyone is born with a singing voice nor musical geniuses (ie Billy Joel).

After all that I still didn't give a clear answer.

ok that's a complicated issue that I've had to debate with people about all the time...

on the rap side of things it's kinda hard to answer..it has to be pretty simple for rappers like nelly and chingy, b/c they write simple ass lyrics over a beat that someone else produced...and then they record the lyrics...boom they're done with that music...but if you have a complex emcee like..let's say...Nas for example...they put thought into the rhyming and story telling of the songs..and make great songs...ESPECIALLY if they're a producer/rapper like kanye west, producing is just like playing an instrument, except you don't have to do it at the live concerts...

on the rock side however..you have to have an entire band...which TRUST ME is very hard to do in itself..each member of the band has to learn how to play their instrument in a way that stands out from everybody else...the singer has to have an attractive voice since nobody gives a shit about rock lyrics...(unless it's deathmetal, then the singer has to kill his throat by screaming all the time) on top of that..the band has to stick together and put up with all the bullshit of being a band...

So..I'd say..that being in a rock band is DEFINATELY harder..but it all depends on each individual rapper/rocker to decide who has more talent...in my opinion, Tech N9ne has more talent than the singer from Nickleback, because tech writes complex lyrics and has to rap them in diffrent speeds all the time and the nickleback guy just sings simple songs about failed relationships...but to say that Tech N9ne is better than the entire band would be kinda hard to say b/c you're comparing one guy to 5...

    get my point?

if not then..ehhh who cares? lol

Rappers are more talented b/c the music sounds better

    see that's a good answer

    Shit...

Any average joe could start a rock band if they wanted...

    Rapping is way harder...
    Especially being a good one...

You gotta get flow, ride the beat, have a good voice, rap with emotion, have good wordplay, delivery...

    Rapping isn't easy...

    Rock is...

this whole thread is going to be full of ignorant answers.

rocker will say rapping is easy, rappers will say rock is easy

when fact is both have their hard and easy parts...

its music, all music forms are diffrent and take diffrent types of talent.

Depends which way you look at it...

Rap is harder to write for... far longer and varied verses, and far more complex lyrics... However, rapping can be learnt... Not everyone can be Rakim, but basically everyone can rap to a satisfactory (listenable) level as long as they practice enough and stick to it...

Singing, on the other hand, I believe is natural talent.. If you already have the talent, you can practice it, but you can't just learn to sing... I've been singing since fucking kindergarten to 5th grade and I still suck

And playing instruments is NOT easy, it takes incredible talent, especially to be recongnized for your abilities

But in the end... who fucking cares? Rappers are not about instruments, they're about lyrics and ability to keep the crowd interested, so you can't use the 'they dont play anything' excuse... They probably didnt WANT to play anything anyway

As a side note, i gotta say Andre3000 is one of the most talented people I know of...He can play bass guitar, acoustic, drums, keys AND he can sing, rap and produce...

He can basically make an entire album entirely by himself

i think rapping is harder than being than being a rockstar
i won't go into it that deeply but compare being a good freestyler to a good guitarist, a guitarist can play music that he knows or is on a bit of paper but he is doing something really complicated but a freestyler can rap of the top of his head which is alot harder than playing prewritten music. the guitarist can screw up a note (or something) and no one will thing less of him but if the freestyler start being dry or can't come with out with any decent lines than he has immediately fucked up.

(sorry if thats unclear, it makes sense to me but i wrote it)

okau...umm, any average joe can rap...

being a "Rocker" is harder, especially being a good one. i love hip hop more, but im not ignorant, rock music takes more talent. the talent in hip hop music is in the producers, and in the lyrics of the emcee, that is the reflection of the talent. the talent in rock is reflected in musical understanding, usually...not all the time, rock artists are well educated in music theory etc. listen to complex bands such as tool and their talent exceeds any rapper by far, even rappers that give me my favorite music, im just telling the truth, bands with this type of knowledge have talent...being a GREAT drummer or guitarist is extremely hard...extremely...takes years and years of practice...being a great rapper in the mainstream means that your lucky to have a good producer, or a good ghostwriter, [unless you write your lyrics, which is talent to write GREAT lyrics, i'll give you that]...and then you need to be lucky to have a good voice for rhyming.

Being as I've played in a rock band and I now rap I think I can say rock bands have more talent than a rapper. But a Producer Rapper duo take more skill than playing rock. Making a good beat is much harder than playing guitar well. It takes less time to become good at rock lyrics than rap lyrics. So rap bands, being rapper and producer takes more talent.
