    Makin a worth while beat

What up, I'm new to the forum but not new to the game. I'm really dominant on the creative side of producing but when it comes to actually makin a beat I'm not as solid, I do well enough to get by, but I'd like to do better before I put something out there. Now I was a drum major and makin beats is my thing hands down, but when it comes to melodies and chords I'm a mess. I'm asking out of actual curiosity and ignorance in that particular subject, so easy on the remarks, My lyricals are nothing to mess with, I appreciate the help ppls, Hey My bad peoples I'm working with A 61 key yamaha keyboard with a lot of good soundsm as well as fruity loops.

pretty much when it comes to melodies, my biggest piece of advice is...

do all the RCM rudiments, grade 4 harmonies, and listen to other songs, try to immitate. Just for practice. then go from there.

If u dont wanna do all the studying listen to a WIDE, and i mean WIDE variety of music and try to replicate the melodies u hear for practice.

I forgot one thing, I apologize, I've done the method where you say pretty much shadow someones work, well I've done that with Lil John and the Eastside boys Yeah for Usher, and damn with youngbloods, My keyboard has those exact same sounds believe it or not, and If i could I'd demostrate right now, I got that aspect down a lil bit, I have an important question, Are the really successful producers actually educated in their field, meaning music theory and keyboard knowlege or instrument knowlege or is sampling how they make platinum plus hits.

Can you make and organize a complete song with the knowlege you've attained from it? If so I'll go out tonight and get it.

dog, music theory is music theory no matter what book you read it from, so music theory for dummmies is the exact same info as any other music theory book.

music theory will teach you chords, frequencies, how diff instruments work, etc etc...harmonics, reverb...

Thats cool, Hey believe it or not, I'm not familiar with sampling. I actually thought these people making these horrendous Ill type tracks actually sat down and composed songs, Silly me huh? Any way without being condesending as people tend to do here, what do you do when you sample in other words how do you do it, Now you're talking to someone who actually creates their music so if you have the time I'd really appreciate it if you broke that down for me. You don't have to tell me where you get your sounds, just how you do it when you get what ever it is you're looking for. Aight thankx

u use your ear, listen to old soul music, classical music..jazz music..ANY music...and u gotta try and pick out parts u can "flip"

its not just take a loop, throw drums on it (well sometimes it is...lol)

    but once u hear it..u record it...chop it up...reverse it..stretch it..whatever u gotta do.

then lay the drums on it..

^^^There is really no "time" frame on learning knowledge of the keyboard. It's entirely up to you, depending on how much practice you up for and how dedicated you really are. I would suggest taking piano lessons if you have not already, and some music theory classes. It really does help out, and makes you understanding of everything a bit clearer in my eyes.....I'd check it out tho. Can't ever be too old to start anything..................
