i wana know what are the things(software and hardware)that i need to make songs on my home pc? my budget is abt $500 max. and i already have a good mic and a good sound card... i just need to know wht other things should i get(mixers, beat makers, etc.)?
cool edit is good to record and mix on for me at least....and fruity loops is good for making instrumentals dat sound real and not dat fake ass DJ scratching shit either...peace.

iight thx man.... i have 1 more question... is there anything else i need besides cool edit and fruity loops? oh and whenever i record somethin on my PC, the sound isnt really that good... so what should i do 2 make the sound quality better?

well what kinda mic do you have first off? Are you using a cheap labtec mic? and your standard sound card or do you have real stuff?
I suggest just buying FL Studio 4 or the Producers Edition, and don't waste anymore money on samples or anything, and mess with the sounds in FL first. You sound completely new at this......seriously, you gotta start off slow. Don't waste money by buying a bunch of things that you might not need to use. Cool Edit is a good program, but download the demo first, so you get a hang of it. Also, check out the FL demo as well..........Once you get familiar with the programs, buy em.

^^ What kind of mic do you have? Is it just an average one with 1/4" input's or XLR input's? If it's got XLR, and you got $500.....I'd go straight for the MBox bundle, which you can find on Musician's Friend. It comes with Pro Tools LE too...........And it's $449....which will fit right into your budget.....If not, get the M-Audio Delta-T or a USB interface like the TASCAM US-122........The MBox would be a smart move tho....
FL is a great program for makin beats, which it is in the same fact very under-rated by some users. But there are many different others too, but FL is what I've always worked on. I heard Propellerhead Reason is a good one too, but I have yet to try it out.

hmm... my mic's name is "Plantronics'... it cost me $30.. so i guess it's not a good mic, or is it? anyway... if it isn't, tell me the exact name of the mic that i SHOULD buy... oh and if i should get MBox, where can i find it... coz i've looked in alot of stores for mics and i dont think i ever saw one thats $449? should i get a better soundcard? which one too? oh and thx for helping me...Originally Posted by Trip Marxx

An Mbox is not a mic, but a soundcard/interface. You find it on Musiciansfriend.com or a local pro audio store may be able to order it for you.......
Plantronics? Never heard of it? I have a Rode NT1-A that I got for $200...a large condenser mic. If you going to invest into any microphone, go for a condenser. This mic fulfills all my needs. It wasn't outrageously expensive, not cheap, and produces good sound.......
Truthfully, I still don't know what you exactly want to record or not? So really, tellin you what mic/soundcard to buy is difficult. But with $500 max budget, and probably a regular PC soundcard with a $30 mic, I would suggest............
You could land an MXL 990 Condenser Mic for $70......
XLR cable......$15-$20 (depending on how much feet you need)
Mic stand....$30 (if you don't already have one)
Tascam US-122 Interface/soundcard...$200 (will do the job perfect with the MXL mic)
And last but not least....$99-$149 for FL Studio 4.........
This looks like it could run anywhere from $415-$470...which puts ya just under you budget.......
