LLL Season XXIII - Chat/Predictions/Beef

I have never been so uncomfortable listening to music.

Not like upset or disturbed. Just like, uncomfortable.


I would rather shake someone's hands with sweaty palms and look them dead in the eye than finish listening to that song.

In high school, I was working at a bespoke (boutique?) furniture manufacturer in Northwest CT.

Nothing fancy - I worked in the warehouse.

But I worked with a couple of other people, and so I made some friends.

One day, after work, one of my co workers invited me over for a beer. I was like sure dude, it's right down the road. I was like 16 so I wasn't drinking much yet. And I'd been fighting since I was like 10 so I don't really get nervous about personal safety or anything.

So I went.

I met his wife. She was cool. He's like yo let's turn on some music. I'm like ok.

All of the sudden it's the most racist music I've ever heard. I think the first sentence was like, "We should kill all the niggers" or something.

So I'm sitting there, and I'm looking around. And I start to see little things -- like SS thunderbolts etched into the china. Or like turns out that funky old photo in the corner was actually Hitler.

And so I'm drinking this beer, and we're having a normal conversation, and in the background there's some southern guy talking about bringing all the darkies down to the local hanging tree. And this guy's wife is there just talking like there's nothing weird going on.

I finished my beer, politely said goodbye and left. Obviously I never went back.

I had that experience at 16, and it still made me less uncomfortable than getting 15 seconds through your verse on that song.
