I'd say the Sony headphones are gonna sound more precise than any monitors under $500. Some people seem to like the Wharfdale 8.2 monitors. they're around $350. personally i wouldnt waste my money on monitors under a G.
with the setup i recommended you should have no problem achieving good quality tracks.

1820 is a soundcard and an interface with preamps and all that good stuff. i like the sony mdr-7506 headphones.
theunderrated... i'll get to you. sorry man. i just got off work and im tired as fuck... don't feel like lookin up specs. but just for an idea, you're looking at something like 3GHz Pentium 4 w/ HTT, 2GB RAM, 200GB SATA HDD, 16x DVD-RW, NVidia FX5200 dual monitor video card... plus Windows XP Studio Edition and whatever software you want (literally lol)
