You’re arguing that Bag lied because he was scouting for an engineer to work for a non-profit organisation, and you’re assuming that meant that the engineer wouldn’t be paid. Non-profits absolutely can (and often do) pay employees and freelancers, that’s part of their expenses and offset against their income. I’ll answer it, but it’s besides the point whether or not it’s a good value proposition for the employee. You were accusing Bag of lying because you were equating scouting for an employee for a non-profit organisation with scouting for a volunteer to work unpaid.
Back to your question, you could ask that about any job, non-profit or otherwise. Sure you’re generating value for the organisation, but in exchange you get more financial stability than you might expect as a smaller self-employed worker or freelancer. May or may not be worth it for you, but as I said that’s besides the point.

10% of a large number can be a lot more than 100% of a smaller number. Assumably the org would have more spending power and expertise in promotion so you’d sell a lot more. For example you might sell a track for $1 a time independently or have Spotify give you 10c a time sell 1000 times as many copies.

@Chree a non profit in the UK is a business where the profits are reinvested into growing the business or used for charitable causes and not paid out to the shareholders, which is me. I'm fortunate to be in a position where I don't need to earn any more money which is why I am setting up the NPO. Staff & sub-contractors are paid as with any other business arrangement, so the engineer I now have is being paid £3k for mixing / mastering the first pack.
